- 1). Download the 4.2 firmware from FelixBruns.de and click the file name once, to highlight it. Click it once more, to access the file name editing menu, and replace "zip" with "ipsw" at the end of the file name. The extension name change is necessary for iTunes to recognize the firmware, prior to installing it.
- 2). Insert the iPod connector cable into the iPod Touch's 30-pin dock port on the bottom of the device. Insert the opposite end of the connector cable directly into the computer's USB port.
- 3). Double-click the iTunes program icon on your desktop, and click the iPod Touch's name in the side menu.
- 4). Click "No" in the pop-up dialog box that asks to sync your iPod Touch with the current iTunes library. Click the "Summary" tab in iTunes. Hold down "Shift" on your PC, or hold down "Option" on your Mac and click "Restore" in the Summary window to open the Choose a File window.
- 5). Click the downloaded firmware file in the Choose a File window, and click "Open" or "Choose" to select it. iTunes automatically begins to restore the iPod Touch and install the 3.2 firmware onto the device.
- 6). Wait for iTunes to download the firmware update and install the software on the iPod Touch. When finished, iTunes displays the "OK to disconnect" message at the top of its program window.
