- 1). Paint the wall behind the sofa in your accent color or another neutral shade to frame the brown sofa. For example, fuchsia, sky blue or lime green would work with dark or light brown sofas. To keep it neutral, paint the wall chocolate for a light brown sofa or cream for a dark brown sofa.
- 2). Arrange the furniture to complement the sofa and use it as the anchor in the room. A loveseat or two chairs could sit across from the sofa or on each side of the couch facing each other. Use tables with simple, clean lines in dark or light wood tones or glass and metal. Round, square and rectangular shapes are OK.
- 3). Add texture to the room with textiles. A high-pile or fuzzy rug in your accent color or with bold stripes can anchor your furniture arrangement. Sheer curtains or simple bamboo shades can provide privacy without taking away from your decor.

Simple lines are the key, but with something bold and interesting, such as a piece of modern art that includes the accent color you're using in the living room. One large piece or two pieces that are the same size are better than multiple small pieces.
- 5). Install interesting lighting, such as a chandelier. Antique or modern pieces will work. Hang the chandelier over the sofa, behind it or off to one side of it. Lamps with clean lines or track lighting that shines on your artwork will also add to the room. Consider a lamp or lampshade in your bold accent color.
- 6). Accessorize the brown sofa with pillows. Use one or two pillows on each end of the sofa in simple squares, interesting fabrics and bold colors. Orange, yellow, lime green, blue, red and fuchsia are some ideas that work well with brown. Sprinkle the accent color throughout the room in a couple of places using candles, sleek vases or pottery.
