The iPhone is a dynamic piece of technology with a great deal of unique, potentially life-changing communication features. However, Apple is a business, and therefore wishes to limit the ability of its customers to use the device that Apple manufactures with other device makers or ones that do not have an explicit contract with Apple themselves. Unlocking and jailbreaking your iPhone is a legal and safe way to add features. - Once an iPhone has been jailbroken and unlocked, you have access to another repository of software applications which you can install on your device. This takes the form of an alternative "store" called Cydia that includes programs you would not find in the official one due to its breaking of the official App Store's guidelines. Cydia also offers the opportunity to install apps from any other repository source online, or from the device's hard drive itself.
- iPhone users are specifically forced to sign a contract with AT&T to provide phone and Internet data service. However, when this plan runs out, users who have unlocked their mobile devices are able to use the phone with any other provider. As long as they have a data plan and a phone plan, the phone may be activated on its own by the user with any other carrier.
- Another advantage to unlocking and jailbreaking your iPhone is the ability to tether your phone's Internet connection to a personal computer. So, for example, if you wanted to use your phone's wireless data plan to connect to the Internet on your laptop, where no WiFi services are available, you would be able to do so. This is something that is blocked in the iPhone when it is purchased, but becomes an option once the phone has been unlocked.
