You've decided edging and trimming fabrics in one motion is what you want to do for your projects. Or you prefer to work with overlock stitching on knit fabrics, piping and accents such as smocking or pin tucking, or you desire to make cover, safety and mock safety stitches. A serger is the sewing machine you need to do these things. The Elna 344 Serger is a 4-thread capacity machine with basic functions and accessories.

    The Machine Itself

    • The Elna 344 Serger weighs 18.73 pounds (8.5 kg), and measures 10.23 inches (26 cm) wide by 11.81 inches (30 cm) tall. Allow for greater height requirement in your work area if the thread antenna is extended. The Elna 344 has a maximum speed of 1300 rpm.

    Workspace Needed

    • How much room you will need around your serger depends upon the project you are working on. The project lies to the left of the sewing action. The serger itself is mobile and can be used on any solid surface. Sewing extension tables can be purchased to provide a smooth work area level with the pressure feet and plates. Extension plates can be purchased to elevate the machine 3 inches above the work surface to accommodate heavier garments. Users report Elna sergers have a larger "D" space to the right of the needles than other comparable machines.

    Stitches Used

    • Stitch lengths can be adjusted from 1.0 to 4.0 mm (0.03 to .15 inches). Many different types of feet can be purchased to accessorize the Elna 344. For example, a tapping foot will make sewing 1 cm (.38 or 3/8-inch) tape or ribbon easier.
