    • 1). Open the protractor to measure 1 1/2 inches from the tip of the graphite to the needle. The 1 1/2-inch measurement is the radius of the circle and will give you a final circle with a diameter of 3 inches. Twist the protractor to draw a circle.

    • 2). Measure the diameter of your candle across the widest part of its base. Add 1/2 inch to the measurement for an opening for the candle. For example, if the diameter of the base of your candle is 1/2 inch, you'll need to create a circle of 1 inch in diameter.

    • 3). Open the protractor to half of your measurement for the opening for the candle. In the case of the example, open to measure 1/2 inch from the tip of the graphite to the tip of the needle.

    • 4). Push the protractor needle into the cardstock in the same needle hole you made in Step 2. Twirl the protractor so the needle stays in place and the graphite draws a full circle on your cardstock.

    • 5). Cut out the 3 inch circle.

    • 6). Divide the central circle into eight by drawing four straight lines that run across the diameter of the circle. Then equally space lines between the four, creating eight lines. Make sure all eight segments are equal in size.

    • 7). Slice through each of the lines with an knife. Be careful not to bend the tabs.

    • 8). Erase any markings on the cardstock. Push the base of the candle through the central circle tabs so that the tabs hold the candle drip paper to the tapered candle.
