    • 1). Lay the entire sweater on a flat surface, such as a large table. Having part of the sweater drape over the edge can stretch the sweater and cause you to cut the fabric in the wrong dimensions. Place soup cans on top of the sweater if it is extra bulky and needs to be weighted down to be flat.

    • 2). Measure the area that you want to cut. For example, figure out exactly how many inches you will want to bring the sweater up when shortening it. Mark this measurement by inserting straight pins along the line.

    • 3). Employ a sewing machine to sew along the line of the pins.

    • 4). Cut the fabric on the outside of the sewed line carefully with fabric or sharp scissors. In addition to preventing the sweater from unraveling, the sewed line keeps the fabric in place while you are cutting so that you are able to get a proper line.
