How to Cast Far in Fishing With a Spinning Rod

    • 1). Load the rod and reel with fishing line. Check the side of the rod to determine the lowest-strength line the rod can handle. Thin line can be cast further because there is less friction than there is with heavier, thicker fishing line.

    • 2). Check the side of the spinning rod to determine the maximum lure weight the rod can handle. Tie on a lure of that weight using a Palomar knot. The lure itself should be aerodynamic. Jigs and spoons are examples of aerodynamic lures.

    • 3). Open the bail of the spinning reel by flipping it upward. Let line off the spool until there is 24 inches of line between the rod tip and the lure.

    • 4). Place the index finger of your casting hand on the line just above the reel so no more line comes off the spool. Grab the butt of the spinning rod with your other hand.

    • 5). Bring the spinning rod and reel toward your back, over your casting shoulder. Continue until the rod makes a 45-degree angle with your back.

    • 6). Bring the rod and reel forward over your casting shoulder.

    • 7). Snap your wrists forward and release your index finger from the fishing line as the rod and reel travel in front of your casting shoulder.
