How to Clean a Footing Drain
- 1). Put on work gloves and goggles.
- 2). Find the footing drain cleanout in your basement. It should have a cap or lid that you may have to pry off or unscrew.
- 3). Look into the footing drain cleanout to see if there is any debris near the opening that you can remove by hand. You may need a flashlight to see into the cleanout.
- 4). Push the end of a plumbing snake into the footing drain cleanout. When you reach an obstacle that does not budge when you push the snake further, twist the handle and pull the snake back out of the cleanout.
- 5). Continue using the plumbing snake until the drain is cleared or until you have pushed the snake as far as it will go. Test the drain by pouring hot water into the cleanout. If the drain runs slowly, consider renting a power snake from your local home improvement supply store. These pieces of equipment have longer cables that can snake the entire drain.
- 6). Replace the cap once the drain is fully cleared.
