Granite is, according to Granite-Sandstone.com, "primarily composed of feldspar, quartz and lesser amounts of dark minerals." Granite comes from "deep within the earth," claims the site, and, because it cools under a tremendous pressure, grows quite hard. It is prized for its hardness and resistance to staining. Durability is accompanied by beauty that manifests in such colors as pink, black and gray.

Pink granite rocks are commonly used for landscaping, often to complement slab granite as a building material. It is ideal for bordering walkways, garden areas, fountains and plantings. The crystalline nature of granite lends the rock a subtle shimmer that can prove enchanting in daytime sunlight or nighttime lighting.

Black granite is a classic shade that lends elegance to buildings and an otherworldly quality to rock applications. Black granite rock may be used in fountains, walkways and to set off statues. It can also be used as a decorative facing for buildings, bridges and monuments. If you are trying to create a sense of warmth and homeyness, black granite may not be the ideal choice.
