Free Instructions for Felted Purses
- 1). Select a heavy, knitted wool fabric in a color of your choice. Cut a square of fabric measuring 12-by-12 inches.
- 2). Thread your needle with 36 inches of thread. Tie the two ends of thread together. Use a thick, colorful thread like embroidery thread or needlepoint thread.
- 3). Fold the fabric square from the bottom, upward, by 6 inches.
- 4). Sew the edges of the folded part of the wool fabric. This creates half-pouch. Use a standard overcast stitch to create a decorative edge (see Resources).
- 5). Embellish and protect the frayed edges of the singular flap of fabric that folds over the pouch you just sewed by using the same overcast stitch technique around the flap's edge. Sew this around all of the purse's edges for embellishment.
- 6). Squeeze a small dot of fabric glue to the backside of the male part of a snap button set. Attach the male side of the button to the center of the underside of the top flap of the purse. Glue the female side of the button set to the front surface of the pouch part of the purse. Align it to where the female and male parts of the snap button set match evenly when the pouch is folded closed. Let the purse dry for 20 minutes.
- 7). Create the felted appearance of the wool fabric by holding the sandpaper sheet in one hand and holding the purse down firmly on a stable surface with the other. Use circular motion and buff the fabric of the entire purse with the sandpaper. Do this for 10 to 15 minutes on each side, being as rough as you want. This causes the fabric to fuzz up like felt.
