How to Sew a Sweatshirt to Make a Jacket
- 1). Pick out the stitches at the sweatshirt's waistband and remove the waistband. Set aside for later use. Remove the sleeve cuff bands.
- 2). Lie the sweatshirt on a flat surface and cut up the center of the front. Fold the top of the center back on itself 3/4 inch, with right sides together. Sew 3/4 inch along the top using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Clip the corner diagonally outside the seam line and turn right-side out. This forms a finished tab at the end of the collar. Repeat with the other side.
- 3). Measure the neck of the jacket from edge to edge. Subtract 2 1/2 inches, and cut a piece of the saved waistband to that measurement to make a collar. For example; if the neck opening measures 18 inches, cut a piece of waistband 15 1/2 inches long. Fold the waistband lengthwise with right sides together. Pin and sew each end closed with a 1/4-inch seam. Turn the collar right-side out.
- 4). Pin one edge of the collar along the wrong side of the neckline, beginning 1 1/2 inches from the edge. Check that the long edge of the collar is open, and positioned so it laps over the raw edges in later steps. Sew the collar to the neck opening. Stitch in the groove formed by first seam to flatten the neck to the collar. Pull the open edge of the collar over the raw edges of the neckline, fold under and sew in place by hand.
- 5). Measure the sleeves to the desired length plus 1 inch. Fold over 1/4 inch, and again 3/4 inch on the sleeve ends. Sew the hem.
- 6). Fold over 1/4 inch, and again 3/4 inch on the front and bottom raw edges, and hem with a straight stitch to finish the edges. Measure five evenly-spaced buttonholes down the front. Use a buttonhole attachment and make buttonholes. Sew on the buttons.
