How to Sew a Child's Tool Belt
- 1). Cut a 10-inch square and a 10-by-15-inch rectangle from the 1/2 yard of fabric using a rotary cutter guided by a ruler. Use a cutting mat under your fabric to protect your work surface from the blade of the rotary cutter.
- 2). Cut a 2-by-45-inch strip from your 1/4 yard of contrasting fabric. Also, cut a 4-by-6-inch strip from this fabric.
- 3). Fold the 10-by-10-inch square in half with the right side of the fabric facing out and press the fold. This will be the pocket of the tool belt. Fold the 10-by-15-inch piece in half with the right side facing out by bringing the 10-inch edges together. This will be the background piece of the tool belt. Press this fold as well.
- 4). Fold the 2-inch wide strip of contrasting fabric in half lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing out. Leave the 4-inch wide strip alone for now. Press the fold and then open the strip. Fold the long edges of each strip in to the center crease. Press these folds before folding the strip in half along the center crease again. This turns the strip of contrasting fabric into a piece of bias tape.
- 5). Fold the 4-by-6-inch strip of contrasting fabric in half lengthwise with the right side of the fabric on the inside. Sew the open 6-inch edge of the piece closed with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn the piece of fabric right side out. This will be the hammer loop. Press the piece of fabric flat.
- 6). Fold the hammer loop strip of fabric in half width-wise. Line up the open edges of the folded strip with the left hand edge of the pocket piece 3 inches down from the top edge, the folded edge, of the pocket. Sew the loop in place with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- 7). Unfold the background fabric, which is the 10-by-15-inch rectangle. Lay the pocket on top of the right side of the background fabric with the hammer loop side of the pocket facing up. Line up the bottom edge of the pocket with the bottom 10-inch edge of the background piece. Fold the background piece in half, this time with the right side of the fabric inside the fold as well as the pocket piece.
- 8). Sew along the three open sides of the folded background piece, leaving a 3-inch opening in the middle of the right side. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the whole piece right side out through the 3-inch opening. The pocket is now attached to the background piece and the hammer loop hangs off the side.
- 9). Fold the raw edges along the 3-inch opening in a 1/2 inch. Press the fold. Sew along the both sides and the bottom edge of the piece with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Open your 45-inch-long piece of bias tape and slide it down over the top of the background piece so the background piece is centered along the tape's length. Fold the tape in half and sew in closed along the entire length to complete the tie for securing the tool belt around the child's waist. - 11
Sew four vertical seams down the pocket to divide it into four smaller pockets. Sew these seams roughly 2 inches apart. You don't need to measure them, just eyeball them.
