    • 1). Position a spool of fishing line nearby. There is a natural twist in how the line spins out from the spool, so align it properly with the spinning reel to eliminate line twists.

    • 2). Brace the spinning reel against your leg, which will allow you to control the reel and apply pressure to the line as needed.

    • 3). Pull the tag end of the fishing line through the guides, which are located along the length of the rod. Hold the tag end of the line to create tension on the line. Again, this is the end that is through the last guide at the tip of the spinning reel.

    • 4). Tie the free end of the fishing line onto the spool, which is located near the handle on the end of the fishing reel. Flip the bail down to secure the line.

    • 5). Spin the fishing line onto the spool by cranking the handle in circles. Continue to hold the line at the center of the fishing reel to create tension and minimize slack. The line must feel firm as it passes onto the spool.

    • 6). Finish off the line. Allow the fishing line to reach approximately 1/8 inch from the rim. Cut the line.
