    • 1). Measure the halfway point of the 2-by-4 board using a measuring tape. Mark that point with a pencil.

    • 2). Cut the 2-by-4 board in half using the saw so you have two pieces of board that are each 16 inches long.

    • 3). Attach the two boards by installing the hinge at the end of the two boards. Use the screws that come with the hinge kit. The two boards should fold inward so they stack flat, one on top of the other.

    • 4). Attach both jar lids to the insides of the boards on the end opposite the hinge using the two 1-inch screws. The jar lids should line up when the boards are folded. They will serve to keep the can in place as it is crushed.

    • 5). Attach the door handle to the top board just above the jar lids. Place the handle at the end of the board that is opposite the hinge, like the jar lids. Use the screws that come in the screen door handle kit to attach the door handle to the wood.

    • 6). Test the can crusher by placing a can in the bottom jar lid and placing pressure on the door handle. The top board will come down on top of the can and crush it.
