How to Kill Saltwater Algae

    • 1). Adjust the temperature in the aquarium to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Saltwater fish can flourish at this temperature, but it's difficult for algae to survive. The warmer the saltwater, the more the algae will spread.

    • 2). Top off your saltwater fish tank with deionized water when some of the water evaporates. The deionized water will fight the algae growth.

    • 3). Use high quality carbon in an external filter to clean the water. The filter should slide right into a slot on your fish tank lid. The filter will remove excess organic material from the water. The algae feeds on the organic matter, so this will help kill the algae.

    • 4). Avoid overfeeding your fish. The extra organic matter in the leftover food will feed the algae growth.

    • 5). Introduce good algae such as macro algae into your saltwater fish tank. This beneficial algae will compete with the bad algae for food, causing it to starve and die off.

    • 6). Put turbo snails into your tank. They will eat the algae and kill it.
