Making a ring can be a simple jewelry project, especially if you have the right supplies. Create your own dramatic cocktail ring using great-aunt Hattie's cherished brooch or make a quick, personalized ring with a photo charm. Look for ring-based jewelry making supplies at craft and hobby stores as well as online jewelry suppliers. - Ring blanks are metal bands with tops that support the ring embellishments. Tops may be flat or they may have bezel-cups in a variety of sizes. Ring blanks may be adjustable or they may be sized by small, medium or large. Ring blank metals range from gold to silver. Some have designs on the sides, others do not. You can also make ring bands to fit your style with seed beads or small 3 mm and 4 mm round beads. Peyote stitch and the right angle weave pattern are common beading designs for handmade rings.
- Top the ring blank or homemade ring band with jewelry making, sewing and craft supplies. Encircle a rivoli stone with a seed bead bezel and glue it to the top of a bezel-cup ring blank. Decorate buttons with beads to make quirky embellishments for homemade rings. Remove the backs from a vintage brooch and attach it to the top of a ring blank. Other crafty ring embellishments include homemade clay shapes, flat-backed rhinestones and photo charms.
- Select a quality jeweler's glue to attach embellishments, beads and rivoli stones to a metal or beaded ring base. Liquid jeweler's glue dries clear and attaches glass, clay and plastic to metal. Viscous jeweler's glue also dries clear and is used to attach heavy jewelry items or beaded rivolis to metal or beaded ring bases.
- Other types of jewelry making supplies that you'll need to make rings include beading thread, beading wax and beading needles or soft monofilament line to make homemade ring bases. Beading needles are long and thin to fit through the tiny seed bead openings. Beading thread is made from silk and is strong enough to hold multiple beads together. Beading wax conditions beading thread so it will not fray as it makes multiple passes through beads. Soft monofilament line is similar to fishing line, but not as stiff so it ties better for jewelry. You can use soft monofilament line to make a right angle weave design for a ring base.
