How to Build an Elk Horn 4 Piece Fly Rod
- 1). Set out the rod blanks on a work bench. Arrange the Elk Horn rod blanks in order from widest to narrowest based in the rod blank diameter. Use four rod blanks, for a total length between 8 to 9 feet, depending on your preference.
- 2). Slide the corresponding rod ferrules onto the ends of the rod blanks. The ferrules are the sleeves the rod blank ends slide into for assembly into a full length rod. Line the interior of the widest end (where it slides onto the end of the larger sized rod blank) with epoxy because the ferrule needs to be permanently attached to that end of the rod blank.
- 3). Slide the rod guides onto the rod blanks, aligning them so they follow the same line for the length of the rod. Wrap the guides onto the reel after using epoxy to glue them in place. Use the rod thread to add the wrapping to the guides.
- 4). Slide the cork handle over the end of the largest rod blank, along with the reel sleeve. The reel sleeve is a metal collar that secures the reel foot.
- 5). Push the reel foot into the reel collar. Turn the collar dial to lock the reel onto the rod. Thread the floater line into the reel, using a double loop knot to secure the first wrap onto the reel spool. Thread the floater up through the guides and pull it down 12 inches. Tie the leader to the end of the floating line and tie your fly to the end of the leader.
- 6). Spool the line into the reel when you're ready to break down the four piece rod for transport.
