How to Do Pattern Darning
- 1). Use a magnifying glass to carefully study the pattern in the material you are repairing. Pick out thread that matches the thread in the patterned material.
- 2). Place a darning mushroom under the hole of the clothing being repaired. Thread the darning needle with the base color of the article of clothing. Do not tie a knot in the end of the thread.
- 3). Begin the vertical stitches about a half inch into the fabric from the edge of the hole. Make several running stitches, then carry the stitch to the opposite side of the hole. Make stitches half an inch into the opposite sides intact fabric. Continue making vertical running stitches until the entire length of the hole is filled with thread.
- 4). Start making horizontal stitches through the vertical stitching, starting the stitches half an inch from the edge and carrying it half an inch to the outer edge of the opposite side. Make the stitches in the pattern darning as tight as the stitches in the article of clothing.
- 5). Continue to weave the horizontal threads through the vertical threads until the entire hole is patched. Match the threads in the article of clothing with matching threads in the pattern darning. Use a magnifying glass when necessary to match the patterns up as closely as possible.
