How to Nail Rig Fishing

    • 1). Tie a 3/0 or 4/0 EWG hook to your fishing line with an improved clinch knot. See References for detailed information on tying the not. Moisten the knot and pull tight.

    • 2). Rig a soft plastic lure such as a stick, trick worm, creature or crayfish on the hook Texas-style without the weight. Insert the point of the hook into the nose of the bait and through the body for about 1 inch. Turn the point of the hook down and out the bottom of the bait. Push the nose of the bait up against the eye of the hook, turn the point toward the bait and push the point through the body and out the top of the bait.

    • 3). Insert a 1 1/2-inch finish nail into the nose, center or tail of the bait depending on the desired sinking effect. Push the nail completely into the body of the bait to prevent the head from being exposed and potentially snagging on objects.

    • 4). Fish the nail rig as you would any other weighted rig. The nail rig provides the ability to quickly remove or change the weight or placement without removing the hook and bait from the line.
