- 1). Fully reel in the downrigger cable. Remove any flashers or fishing lines attached to the cable.
- 2). Lock the downrigger brake handle. Most downrigger brakes lock by pushing them forward.
- 3). Clip a downrigger weight to the snap hook on the end of the downrigger cable. Snap hooks work like key rings or carabiners. Insert the hook of the snap hook into the hole on the weight far enough that the snap closes.
- 4). Install a new snap hook on a broken downrigger cable by attaching a "crimpless snap hook," by hand, to the end of the cable.
