Profile: "Sideways" DVD

"Sideways" (2004) was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director (Alexander Payne), and it received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. At the Golden Globes, where two Best Picture awards are given?one for Drama, the other for Musical or Comedy?"Sideways" was the winner in the latter category. Also, the Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble performance went to the film's principals: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh.

A bittersweet comedy, "Sideways" chronicles a vacation trip taken by longtime friends Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church). They live in Southern California, and it's relatively easy for them to drive up to the not-so-famous wine region north of Santa Barbara.

Miles, who's having trouble getting over a divorce, just wants to drink wine and get sideways, but Jack views the outing as an opportunity to have some sexual adventures before his upcoming wedding. Soon the outgoing Jack is aggressively pursuing a winery tasting room pourer (Sandra Oh) and arranging for the reluctant Miles to pair off with a waitress (Virginia Madsen).

A lot of funny things happen during the movie, and there's some heartbreak as well. But the story is satisfying because Miles' experiences change him, and by film's end, he is better prepared to get on with his life.

The "Sideways" DVD comes with a few bonus materials, including an audio commentary track featuring actors Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church.

Also, there are half a dozen deleted scenes and an alternate version of the scene where the two couples spend a delightful afternoon together. All these scenes are shown with a little context around them so you can see how they would have fitted into the movie if they had not been cut. Finally, there's a six-and-a-half-minute behind-the-scenes featurette where director Alexander Payne talks a little about his film.
