      For most high-quality music composition software, a decent computer is required. Basic system requirements for a PC are a system running Windows XP 32-bit or newer versions such as Windows Vista 32-bit or Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit. A minimum of 512 megabytes of RAM, 550 megabytes of hard disk space and a DVD-ROM drive and at least 800 by 600 monitor resolution are also needed. An Intel Core Duo processor is also recommended but not required. For Mac users, OS X 10.4.11, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or Mac OS X 10.6 will all meet requirements. The same RAM and hard disk space are necessary.

    Finale

    • Finale is one of the most popular music composition software programs. It allows users to enter notes, add special markings, make edits and hear what they have produced. Finale produces both printed pages and audio files and also can produce electronic documents that can be shared and worked on by anyone. Finale's retail price is $600. The upgrade price is $119.95.

    Sibelius

    • Sibelius is another well-known program. Sibelius also allows users to write, play, print and publish the music they compose. It also makes an audio recognition and transcription program that allows you to take a music track and transcribe it into a music score. This program costs $249, and the professional software costs $799.
