    Installing the Battery

    • 1). Press and hold the "Power" button located above the keyboard until the laptop turns off.

    • 2). Flip the laptop over. Locate the battery bay on the bottom-right corner of the laptop. Slide the battery lock in the direction indicated by the arrow on the battery cover, and then remove the battery cover.

    • 3). Slide the battery into the battery bay, making sure that the power contacts on the battery align with the contacts inside the battery bay. The battery lock will click into place when the battery is seated properly in the bay.

    Adjusting the Display

    • 1). Press and hold the "Fn" key. Use the "Up" and "Down" arrow keys to increase or decrease the brightness of the laptop's display.

    • 2). Press and hold the "Fn" key, and then press "F8" to cycle between display inputs if you have connected the laptop to an external monitor or television. Press "Fn" and "F8" once to use the laptop display only, twice to use the external monitor only and three times to use the laptop display and external monitor simultaneously.

    • 3). Click the Windows "Start" button followed by "Control Panel" to change the screen resolution. Click "Appearance and Themes" followed by "Display." Click the "Settings" tab. Select the new resolution from the "Screen Resolution" drop-down menu.

    Using Windows XP

    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button followed by "All Programs" to view a list of all the software installed on your Dell laptop. Click a program icon to launch the program.

    • 2). Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel" to access all of the settings on your laptop.

    • 3). Click "Display" to change the screen settings, wallpapers and screensavers. Click "Mouse" to configure the laptop for left- or right-handed users. Click "Sound and Audio Devices" to change the system volume, and click "Add or Remove Programs" to install or uninstall software.

    • 4). Click the "Start" button followed by "Help and Support" if you need help with Windows XP.

    Troubleshooting the Laptop

    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button followed by "Restart" if you are experiencing problems with the laptop.

    • 2). Press and hold the "F12" key immediately when the Dell logo appears. This will load the "Dell Diagnostics" program.

    • 3). Use the "Up" and "Down" arrow keys to navigate the "Dell Diagnostics" menu. Select "Express Test" to run a 10- to 20-minute hardware diagnostics test. Select "Extended Test" to run a full, one-hour test diagnostics test. Press the "Enter" key to begin the test.

    • 4). Click "Results" to review the diagnostic test results. Select "Errors" to view a list of the hardware errors encountered during the test. Visit Dell's technical support website if the Dell Diagnostics program reports a hardware failure in your laptop. Dell provides telephone, email and online chat contact options for technical support.
