Proper Home Ventilation
- Proper home ventilation has several purposes. Ventilating the home replaces the indoor air with air from the outdoors. This helps reduce allergens, odors and moisture that can grow mold in the home, causing a series of health ailments. Carbon monoxide, radon and formaldehyde, all dangerous compounds, can build up in the home if it is not properly ventilated. According to the EPA, an improperly ventilated home can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
- Natural ventilation uses the forces of the wind to move air throughout the home. Air comes in through openings in the wall or open windows and pushes old air out of the home through natural pressure. Natural ventilation is the oldest and most cost effective way to ventilate the home.
- Spot ventilation is an aid to whole house ventilation that helps move air from one area to the next using small fans. Exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens move air from these areas where moisture and odor are an issue to the outside of the home using pipes or an opening to the outside.
- Use whole house ventilation if you have concerns over spot or natural ventilation. Whole house ventilation uses exhaust fans to move air out of the house and bring air into the home. Balanced ventilation systems force air in equal measures in and out of the home at the same time. Energy recovery ventilation systems pull air into the home and push air out but also use the heat or chill of the air to heat or cool the home.
