How to Clean With a Mop & Broom

    • 1). Push or pull the broom in one direction across the floor in long smooth motions, lifting the broom into the next position for each sweeping motion. Touch the brushes of the broom to the floor beginning in a corner of the room. Hold the handle with both hands.

    • 2). Gather the dirt and dust from the floor into a single pile and use the broom to push the dirt into the dustpan. Empty the pan into the wastebasket.

    • 3). Fill a bucket three-quarters full with warm water and add a cup of detergent (or the amount of cleaner recommended by the manufacturer). While cleaner is not necessary, it can aid the cleaning process and add a pleasant fragrance to the room. Multi-use floor cleaners are usually well-suited for tile and linoleum, but may not be recommended for hardwood floors.

    • 4). Dip the cloth or sponge end of the mop into the water and ring the excess water from the mop until the water is no longer dripping.

    • 5). Slide the mop along the floor with smooth back-and-forth or up-and-down motions until the entire floor is wet. Begin in a corner of the room and work backward so you don't step on the wet floor. Apply pressure to the mop in areas with stubborn, sticky messes to remove the spots completely.

    • 6). Dip the mop into the water and wring out excess often as you move across the floor. Empty the bucket when the water appears dirty or if the water cools. Refill the bucket with water and cleaner to continue mopping.
