How to Cast With a Mooching Reel
- 1). Hold the handle of a heavy spinning rod with your dominant hand. Split the post of the reel between your middle and ring fingers. Use a spinning reel on the rod that will hold at least 300 yards of 20-pound test monofilament fishing line.
- 2). Wrap your hand around the reel seat and extend your index finger forward. Turn the handle of the reel to move the line guide up near the rod. Hook the line in front of the reel with your finger and hold it against the bottom of the rod.
- 3). Open the bail of the reel until it locks into place. Hold the handle below the reel seat with your other hand to help with control.
- 4). Bring the rod tip back slightly to your side. Let the bait and weight swing back and bend the rod to load the tip. Pull the rod forward to cast the rig and bait into the water.
- 5). Release the line from your index finger to allow the rig to travel forward and into the water. Keep the rod tip up as the weight carries the bait down into the water to the desired depth. Close the bail on the reel and turn the reel handle to take up slack in the line.
