How to Clean Cast-Iron Gates
- 1). Rub the surface ently with a steel wool pad. Before rubbing, make the surface a little wet. Then spread the water around the surface with the steel wool pad and rub the rust off with circular movements. Instead of a steel wool pad, you can also use fine sandpaper. You can also use carbonated soft drinks instead of water.
- 2). Make a paste of ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, and warm water and apply to the surface of your cast iron gate to remove the rust residue. Use a steel wool pad or a scrubbing pad to spread the paste all over the surface and rub it in. Rinse the surface with warm water to remove the vitamin C paste.
- 3). Wet the cast-iron gate with warm water and spread it around the surface with a clean cloth.
- 4). Rub the gate's surface with a plastic scrubber, thick strong brush or a scrub sponge. Allow the cast iron to dry completely.
- 5). Apply a few drops of oil on a clean, dry cloth and wipe the surface of your cast-iron gate. Do not soak the surface, simply rub it in. Make sure not to miss a spot and to cover the surface in a thin film of oil. This will protect the surface of your gate and prevent rusting. You can use oil in a can to spray the surface of the gate more evenly.
