How to Use Foam Insulation Around Replacement Windows
- 1). Go over each side of the open window frame with your hammer to ensure there are no raised nails or other obstructions. Hammer down or pull out any nails or obstructions you encounter.
- 2). Use your hammer to pry off the long plates on the vertical sides of the opening that hide the weight pockets, or the spaces inside the frame where the original window weights hung. This will leave you with open spaces on the sides.
- 3). Drill holes in the bottom and top spans of the frame with your drill and 3/8-inch bit. Put three holes on each span, one on each edge and one in the middle. The holes should go through the surface wood and into the hollows beyond them.
- 4). Spray insulating foam into the open weight pockets on the sides, filling them until the foam is bulging of them.
- 5). Shoot foam into the holes you drilled, filling the hollow areas under and above the opening. Shoot in the foam until it overflows from the holes.
- 6). Let the foam set for 6 hours. Use the edge of your drywall knife to cut off the excess foam that's sitting out from surface. Proceed with the window installation.
