The sport of fishing is a popular activity many take pleasure in whether enjoying a family outing, sport fishing, or just enjoying some relaxing leisure time on your own. Part of the art of fishing includes having a variety of lures in your fishing tackle box. There are various styles and sizes of lures or fishing tackle that can help you catch all the fish you want. Some find that the fishing tackle box and all the goodies inside is just as fun and the fishing itself.
All the varieties of fish inhabiting our waters is the reason for the numerous lures that are available on the market today. Here is a brief list of the most popular lures and how they work.
The Jig:
The jig is a hook that is weighted down with a lead ball that is on the opposite end of the hook. The jig has either a plastic worm or minnow to help attract the fish as the fisherman moves the rod back and forth causing the jig to move.
The Surface Lure:
The surface lure is used to imitate the fish bait on top of the water and they usually have a popping sound to attract the fish. These lures also need to move to assimilate the real thing.
The Plug Lure:
Plug lures are considered crank baits and are designed to look like the body of a fish and run under water. You need to move this lure also to get the fish's attention.
The Fly Lure:
Fish love flies and artificial flies are very successful when used for fly fishing. Fly fishing is performed by flicking a fly rod back and forth overhead mimicking the fly landing and taking off from the surface of the water.
The Swimbait Lure:
The swimbait lure is specially designed to look like a minnow which is a popular bait for most fishermen. The fisherman casts out and slowly reels in causing the lure to look like a real minnow swimming.
The Spinnerbait Lure:
This lure is simply a hook that tows a flashy spinner that catches the fish’s attention. The spinner comes in all different sizes, styles and even colors. Even though you won’t use all these lures at once it’s a good idea to have a variety on hand. A certain lure may work one day and then on another day may not work at all creating the need to change the lure you are using.
