Configuring Your Network Interface to Use DHCP

    • The first step in verifying the proper operation of the Windows XP DHCP client is to ensure that your network interface is indeed configured to use DHCP and not a static address. To configure, go to the Control Panel and select "Network". Then choose the network interface you use to connect to the Internet, single-click on the interface and hold down the right mouse button. Choose "Properties". Then choose the "Protocols" tab. Select "TCP/IP" and check the option that says "Obtain IP address automatically". Click "Apply".

    Verifying Your IP Address

    • Go to the Start Menu and choose "Run". In the box that pops up, type in "CMD" and click "OK". A black command window box should appear on your screen. In that box type the following: ipconfig. Hit "Enter". Look for the following fields to verify that they are not blank: IP address, subnet mask, default gateway. If any one of these fields is blank, you need to renew your IP address.

    Renewing Your IP Address

    • Go to the "Start" menu and choose "Run". In the box that pops up, type "CMD" and click "OK". A black command window box should appear on your screen. In that box type in ipconfig /renew and hit "enter". After a few moments, assuming your DHCP server is working, you should receive a listing of your new IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.
