Dangers of Mold Removal
- Mold growth in a home produces spores and toxins that induce allergy and asthmatic symptoms in people. Other health problems include eye irritation, dry cough, nose and throat irritations and congestion. Headaches and body aches and pains are also common.
- In many cases, mold can be seen or smelled soon after it has begun to grow. Mold is fuzzy and thick, with colors ranging from black to green or blue. In wet areas the mold will have a slimy appearance. Areas where mold is growing will have a musty smell. High moisture areas are the first sign that a problem may exist. Areas that have been flooded or had water standing are at risk of developing mold. Once the water is eliminated, test and inspect all damp areas for mold growth.
- Black mold is very toxic and the most dangerous type for removal. Mycotoxins are produced and released from black mold varieties and can cause harmful medical problems to people. Never remove mold without wearing a respirator to prevent breathing in the toxins that are released. Wearing gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing prevents the mold from making skin contact, which will cause allergic reactions. It is possible for toxins and spores to escape the contained area, so all residents of the building should evacuate during removal. Do not spend long hours cleaning, because you need fresh air to prevent illness from exposure to the mold. While black mold is more toxic than other types of mold, take precautions when removing any mold, especially if you are unsure of the type present.
- Areas where mold is being removed should be completely sealed off or contained to prevent spores from spreading to new areas and starting new growth. Seal the area with plastic sheeting that is duct taped tightly to the wall. Wall units that are contaminated with mold must be completely removed, because spores can penetrate the wood and sheet rock. All moldy sections must be sealed in plastic bags to be removed from the premises to prevent the spores from escaping.
- Preventing growth of mold requires eliminating excess moisture and humidity. Humidity higher than 50 percent promotes mold growth, especially in basements. Cleaning with bleach is effective if it is diluted in water to 10 percent bleach. Bleach straight from the bottle is not as effective. Place an air purifier in areas where mold was present to reduce spores in the air.
