Good Fishing Holes on the Allegheny River Near Kittanning, Pennsylvania

The Allegheny River is known for its fishing, which in mild winters can be done year-round. The river is home to muskellunge, smallmouth bass and catfish. And the area around Kittanning is no exception. Good spots for landing fish are available upstream and downstream from the borough in Armstrong County about 40 miles upstream on the Allegheny from Pittsburgh. - Lock and Dam No. 6 from Clinton to Kittanning in Armstrong County is a popular fishing spot and there are two areas of access to this pool. One is two miles south of Ford City off Route 862 at the mouth of Crooked Creek. And the other is Kittanning's municipal ramp not far from Routes 28 and 422. There is about a mile upstream from Crooked Creek that offers good fishing as well.
- There are numerous spots to catch the muskellunge along the Allegheny near Kittanning. Muskellunge are the largest pikes in Pennsylvania and put up a good fight, making them a memorable catch. Lock and Dam No. 7 downstream to Lock and Dam No. 6, which is south of Kittanning, is ranked as the sixth best Muskellunge spot in Pennsylvania, according to the Fish and Boat Commission. Other popular area spots for muskellunge include the section of river from Richey Run to Sugar Creek, Lock and Dam No. 8 to No. 7, and No. 9 to No. 8 and Sugar Creek downstream to No. 9.
- Some bass-specific holes along the river that are recognized by the commission are between the Ford City Bridge south of Kittanning upstream to Manorville and the West Shore of Lock No. 9 across from Kittanning near Rimerton and Wattersonville. The bridge at Parker, Pa., and Lock No. 6 are also good bass spots.
