How to Water Flowerpots

    • 1). Stick your finger 1 inch into the soil. Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, but before it dries out completely.

    • 2). Water at the base of the plant until the excess water starts dripping from the bottom drainage holes in the pot. Avoid wetting the foliage and leaves when you water, as this can lead to mildew problems.

    • 3). Leave the pot to drain for 15 minutes after watering. Empty the collected water from the drip tray, which sits beneath the pot, after it has finished draining. Standing water in the drip tray can lead to soggy soil and root rot.

    • 4). Gradually reduce watering when the plant enters its dormant cycle if applicable. Evergreen plants do not go fully dormant. Water just often enough to prevent the soil from drying out completely until growth resumes, usually in spring.
