How to Craft With Mirrors

    • 1). Paint a design on a mirror to change the shape or add a whimsical touch. There are templates online for making a plain oval mirror look like a hand-held mirror with a painted frame. You can make any shape or design you want. To make a template to paint over, trace your design onto the backing of contact paper and carefully cut it out. Peel off the backing of the contact paper after cutting out the design and place it on the mirror. Use acrylic, no-prime spray paint in a well-ventilated area and paint the entire surface of the mirror, painting directly over the contact paper. When the paint has dried for 30 minutes, carefully peel up the contact paper to reveal the mirrored shape beneath. For a young girl's room, try cutting the shape of a princess crown out of contact paper and using the rest of the sheet to cover the mirror, allowing you to paint only the shape of the crown exactly where it would sit on her head in her reflection.

    • 2). Frame a mirror with painted three-dimensional objects of your choice. Bordering a mirror with brightly painted plastic spoons can give an adorable floral appearance to your mirror. Painted clothes pins also work well for a whimsical border. Choose an object with a mostly flat back to make it easier to glue the objects to the mirror. Purchase brightly colored spoons or paint them whatever color you prefer and allow them to dry before gluing them to the mirror. Use a hot glue gun to adhere the objects all the way around the perimeter of the mirror, spacing them evenly.

    • 3). Make a decorative mirror for your home using pre-cut mirrored tiles available at your local craft store. These tiles come in various shapes and often have an adhesive backing to minimize the messiness of glue. To make a mosaic tiled mirror, begin by finding a backing you like. Plywood is fine, although a found object can make a more interesting background. Evenly apply grout to the surface you select and press the tiles down into the grout. Place the tiles close together if you are only using mirrored tiles for a more traditional reflection. Try combining mirrored tiles with pieces of broken dishes or purchase colored tiles as well as mirrored and create patterns.

    • 4). Look for objects at garage sales or in your own home that could be given new life with a mirrored pick-me-up. Glue a professionally cut-to-size mirror onto the strings of old fashioned tennis rackets to hang on the wall. Make a beautiful mirrored tray for your vanity out of a worn old serving platter by gluing a mirror in to the bottom, or turn an old framed mirror into a tray by adhering felt to the backing. Mirrored trays reflect light from candles and colorful floral arrangements, bringing a special romantic quality to any centerpiece.
