    • 1). Measure the specific gravity of the substance you are working with by placing it on an electronic scale for solids, or with a hydrometer for liquids. Write down your findings.

    • 2). Measure the specific gravity of the substance you will be adding to your solid or liquid. Make sure this new substance has a higher specific gravity than the substance to which you're adding it. If you add a substance with a lower specific gravity, you will reduce the specific gravity of the other substance.

    • 3). Add the new substance to the solid or liquid once you have determined it has a higher specific gravity.

    • 4). Measure the new specific gravity with the electronic scale or hydrometer. You can continue to change the ratio of the substances if you are trying to reach a certain specific gravity.
