Ideas for Building Your Own Ice Shack
- When you are making plans for an ice shack, also called an ice fishing house, consider how portable your shack needs to be. Consider how often you will be moving the ice house, and how far it is from your home to your destination(s). Some ice shacks are moved frequently, while others are semi-permanent. How frequently you need to move your ice shack will help you determine what kind of base you will require. Most ice shacks are pulled like a sled, or have wheels that allow them to be rolled. Regardless of how the shack will be moved, the base must be sturdy and feature an opening for fishing. You may want a larger opening if you plan to do any spearing. See Resources below for ice-thickness safety guidelines.
- You can choose from a variety of configurations, although most ice shacks are square or rectangular in shape. The walls can be made from a variety of materials, but plywood is one of the most popular choices for its availability, cost-effectiveness and ease of construction. Construct your ice shack carefully so the walls fit together tightly to shield you from the elements. If you choose to have windows in your shack, they should also be tightly sealed. Depending on the designs you use for your house, the roof may be flat or peaked.
- You will need a place to sit while fishing. You can build seating into your ice shack, benches being the most common, or just allow room for chairs. You will need a place to store your gear; you can install shelving or hooks for this. If you plan to use a heater in your ice shack, you will need an area of the shack that is properly ventilated and allows you to use a protective pad under the heater. When you are using any heater, especially in an enclosed space, observe all safety precautions. Have a fire extinguisher handy as well.
