How to Operate a Hand Held Tape Recorder
- 1). Insert the proper batteries and a tape into the hand-held recorder. Not every recorder has an on/off switch. You can tell the batteries are functional and inserted properly if a light comes on when you press "play," or if the rewind, fast-forward and play functions are working.
- 2). Rewind the tape completely, or to a certain point if you don't want to tape over something. Press the "record" button (on some devices you must press both "play" and "record") to tape the sound that you are looking to capture. Speak clearly into the microphone, saying something like "Test 1, 2, 3" to get a sound bite, and then play it back to make sure your voice recorded clearly.
- 3). Reset the counting device to zero to track the length of your session. Make sure the built-in microphone on the device is pointed toward the subject or area where the sound is coming from. Don't cover up the microphone when recording.
- 4). Rewind the tape after the recording session is finished to play it back. Press "play" to start listening from any given point, or hit "fast forward" to skip over parts. Adjust the volume keys to a level that is comfortable for you.
