How to Solder Iron & Silver
- 1). Clean the iron and silver that you want to solder together. Use sandpaper to remove all oxidation, if there is any present. Use soap and water to clean the metal of dirt, grease and grim. Acetone can be used to wash particularly greasy metal.
- 2). Check the fit of the iron and silver. The seam you plan to solder must be flush. Solder cannot fill gaps. Adjust the metal by cutting, filing or sanding until the fit is flush.
- 3). Place the silver and iron on a charcoal block or other soldering surface. Arrange the materials so the seam is flush. Use a third hand or binding wire to hold the metals if gravity alone will not suffice.
- 4). Paint the seam with flux.
- 5). Place a small amount of solder at one end of the seam. You can use any silver solder, but a medium solder paste will be the least temperamental.
- 6). Heat the entire surface of the iron and silver with your torch using a medium heat setting. Watch until both metals have reached soldering temperature, then run your torch along the seam beginning with the end where you put the solder. The solder will follow the heat of the torch.
- 7). Allow the metals to cool to room temperature.
