How to Weld Handrails

    • 1). Call the local building department and ask them for any specific requirements you must comply with. Inquire about the handrail brackets, including how spaced out the brackets must be from one another.

    • 2). Install the handrail brackets to the distance and requirements of your local building department. Secure the handrail brackets to the wall with concrete screws and the drill.

    • 3). Clean the handrail brackets and the handrail, so it is free of grease and oil. Use a rag to wipe the bracket and handrail clean.

    • 4). Place the welding wire into the MIG welder. Read the MIG welder's manual as the directions for placing the welding wire varies by manufacturer.

    • 5). Weld the brackets to the handrail. Turn on the MIG welder. Touch with the welding tip of the MIG welder, around the area where the handrail meets the handrail bracket. The welding wire will automatically feed from the MIG welder and weld the area the tip touches. Fill in this area with the MIG welder until there is no gap left. Read the MIG welder's manual for specific instructions as not all MIG welders weld alike; some require you to feed the wire manually.

    • 6). Pull on the handrail and ensure it is sturdy. If the handrails moves, check to see if the handrail bracket screws are loose or if you need to re-weld a spot.
