How to Install Shower Floor Tiles

    • 1). Divide the shower floor into four squares, using a level and pencil. Lay tiles along the lines, starting at the middle, without mortar to establish your layout. (Note: Lay the tiles over the drain as if it isn't there, so you can make the rest of the grid consistent.)

    • 2). Pick up all the tiles except those covering the drain. Spread thinset mortar over a few square feet of the floor where you picked up the tiles. Set the floor tiles back in place in the mortar, following the lines that you made and putting spacers between them. Don't mortar the tiles that are directly over the drain, but leave them sitting in place to help position the rest of the tile grid.

    • 3). Spread more mortar, and continue laying tiles. Tile the whole shower floor, except the section around the drain where the unmortared tiles are still sitting. Cut the tiles at the edges of the floor to fit using a tile saw.

    • 4). Let the tiles dry overnight. Remove the spacers.

    • 5). Mark on the tiles that are sitting loosely over the drain, drawing the shape of the drain on the face of the tiles and adding about 1/4 inch of space around the drain perimeter. (You will be able to see the drain's position through the spaces between the tiles.)

    • 6). Cut the tiles along the marks with your tile saw. Spread mortar over the backs of the cut tiles with a notched trowel. Arrange them around the drain. Let them set overnight.

    • 7). Grout the floor, pressing the grout into the lines between the tiles with a grout float. Wipe off the excess grout with a damp sponge. Let the grout cure for two days before using the shower.
