How to Repair a Cedar Shingle Roof
- 1). Visually inspect the shakes that need repair, looking for cracks, loose nails or holes.
- 2). Remove the nails from the shakes above the damaged one using a claw hammer.
- 3). Slide the upper shakes free from their wedge points.
- 4). Remove the nails of the damaged shakes.
- 5). Inspect the underlying asphalt felt for tears or rips.
- 6). Cut damaged asphalt felt away from the sub roofing.
- 7). Cut a patch of felt from an asphalt felt roll, making sure the patch's circumference exceeds the circumference of the damaged shake by 2 to 4 inches.
- 8). Slide the asphalt felt patch beneath the shake you need to fix.
- 9). Caulk the seam of the asphalt felt patch using clear, waterproof caulking.

Wedge the replacement cedar shake into the opening created when you removed the damaged shake. - 11
Nail the replacement cedar shake into place using roofing nails and the roofing hammer. - 12
Nail new cedar shakes in place of the surrounding shakes that you removed.
