How to Pick an Exterior Door Color

    • 1). Go outside and look at your house from the street. Take notice of your existing exterior color. Look at your natural surroundings, including ground cover, trees, bushes and flowers. If you have a digital camera, take a few photos. These will help when you are shopping for paint.

    • 2). Come up with a color palette in your mind. Think about what colors you like and what you think will look good with your existing exterior colors, including any trim.

    • 3). Go to your local home-improvement store and collect exterior paint chip samples that you like. Think bold, not pastel. Start with deep reds, blues and greens. Do not be afraid to wander to the yellows and even grays. Now is the time to play, so grab as many colors in different hues as you like.

    • 4). Take the paint chips and hold them up next to your existing exterior color. Organize the paint chips into piles: Yes, Maybe, Definitely Not.

    • 5). Toss aside the rejected colors and start working with the paint chips you like. Sit on your front porch or stoop with your colors and weed your selection down to your top three.

    • 6). Take your top three selections and look at them against your house at different times of the day. The light will be much different in the morning than the evening.

    • 7). Pick the color that looks best with your house and makes you happy.
