How to Make a Flying Kite That Flies
- 1). Wrap each end of your two dowel rods with two layers of masking tape. Use a knife to cut a small notch in each taped end. The notches will eventually hold the string that creates the kite frame.
- 2). Measure 10 inches from the top of the 36-inch dowel rod. Lay the 33-inch rod horizontally across the 10-inch point to form a cross, with equal space on both sides. Wrap several layers of string in the shape of an "X" around the point where the two rods meet. Reinforce the string with three layers of masking tape.
- 3). Stretch a piece of string all the way around the cross to form a diamond shape. The string should rest in the notches you cut at the ends of the dowel rods in Step 1. Pull the string tight and tie it in a knot. Your horizontal dowel will bow slightly.
- 4). Lay the cross on a sheet of plastic and use a pair of scissors to cut the plastic to roughly the same shape as the frame. Fold the plastic over the string all the way around and tape it into place with masking tape. Use several layers of tape to hold it securely.
- 5). Tie a string around the middle of the crossbars. Keep the string attached to the spool. Take your kite out and fly it, unwinding the string from the spool as necessary.
