Digital technology has made significant advancements in the world of cameras and photography. Surveillance cameras are becoming significantly smaller, allowing them to be installed in just about any location. Memory cards that record the surveillance images also are shrinking. Some cameras even use wireless technology to transmit the images to a computer. - These are not the same as the original pinhole cameras that you made out of a box or tin can. Pinhole surveillance cameras are small enough to fit in the palm of a child's hand. The lens looks like a small pinhole in the casing of the camera. Pinhole cameras have been placed in tissue boxes, stuffed animals and cigarette packages.
- Possibly the smallest commercially available surveillance camera, this camera is 1 inch by ½ inch in size. It uses a 9 volt batter for power that will last up to 10 hours. The camera will transmit the images to a remote location within 1,000 feet of the camera's position. The camera produces images in either color or black and white.
- A little larger than the previously mentioned pinhole camera, these cameras have the ability to use digital zoom technology to magnify the image they are recording. There are no moving parts on the camera. These cameras can zoom up to three times the magnification.
