Installing Plantation Shutters
- 1). Measure the length of your window's sill. Divide this number by 2 to find the center of the sill. Place a piece of masking tape on the center of the windowsill. Draw a pencil mark on the tape to indicate the exact center of the sill.
- 2). Hold the left-hand shutter in front of the window. Line up the right side of the shutter with the mark on the tape. The mounting strip on the bottom left corner should be touching the windowsill.
- 3). Insert wooden shims between the shutter's mounting strip and the window's trim if the trim is not flat. Screw one of the provided screws into each predrilled hole, through the shims and into the window trim to secure the left shutter in place.
- 4). Lift the right shutter up to the window. Position the left side of the shutter on the mark on the tape. Let the mounting strip on the right side rest on the windowsill. Insert shims between the mounting strip and the window trim and secure the shutter in place with two of the supplied screws.
- 5). Score a line down the extended end of the shim with a utility knife to weaken the shim at this point. Bend the shim back and forth to break it off flush with the mounting strip.
- 6). Push one screw cover over each screw. Gently tap the cover in place with a hammer. Connect one of the magnetic catches to a strike plate. Open the shutters. Place the magnetic catch on the window sill, just to the left of the center line. Secure it in place with the two provided screws.
- 7). Close the left shutter and press its back against the two points coming from the strike plate that are still attached to the magnetic catch. Open the shutter. Remove the strike plate from the magnetic catch and position it on the back of the left shutter so the dents in the shutter match up to the two points. Secure it in place with the provided screw.
- 8). Connect the second magnetic catch to the second strike plate. Place the magnetic catch on the sill, just to the right of the center line. Secure it in place. Close the right shutter to make the same indents on the back as you did in the previous step. Secure the strike plate on the back of the shutter.
- 9). Adjust the louver tension, using the sunk screws on either side of the shutters. Turn the screw slowly with a screwdriver until you have reached the desired tension. Peel the center line masking tape off the windowsill.
