Tile Chip Repair

    • 1). Clean the chipped area of your tile with soap and water. Rinse the area thoroughly and let it dry completely -- use a hair dryer for about 15 minute to ensure a dry surface, as tile may soak up water and remain damp for a long time if left to air dry.

    • 2). Apply sealer with a small paint brush into the chip. Do not get sealer onto the glazed, undamaged portion of the tile. Take care to not apply so much sealer that a pool develops in the bottom of the chip. Let the sealer dry for two hours.

    • 3). Apply a coat of finish paint with a small paint brush, again only covering the inside of the chip and not the glazed portion of the tile. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours; if the color is not dark enough, add a second coat and wait another 24 hours.

    • 4). Mix a clear, water-proof marine epoxy to fill the chip. Epoxy comes with two components that must be mixed together; a piece of cardboard affords a good surface to mix the substance with a toothpick or similar tool. Apply the marine epoxy to the chipped area with the toothpick, adding small amounts until the chipped area is level with the surrounding tile. The epoxy will set in about one hour, but do not return the area to regular use for at least one day.
