- 1). Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 gallon of water. Apple cider vinegar has a higher concentration of acetic acid than white vinegar, which makes it great for dissolving difficult stains, but can also make it rough on household surfaces, so make sure to dilute it with water.
- 2). Apply your apple cider vinegar solution to a cloth or sponge and dab the coffee stain gently, covering the entire stain. Do not pour the liquid over the stain, because excess liquid exposure will warp hardwood surfaces. The acetic acid will require some time to break down the coffee stain, so walk away for an hour or two before proceeding.
- 3). Scrub the coffee stain with a soft sponge or cloth. Do not use a scouring pad or other abrasive cleaning pad, because hardwood scratches easily. Continue to scrub until the coffee stain breaks away completely. If you cannot remove the entire stain, repeat Steps 1 through 3.
- 4). Dab the area with another sponge, dampened with a cola product like Coca-Cola, Pepsi or Shasta, if the aforementioned method fails to eliminate the stain. Colas contain phosphoric acid, a powerful natural cleaning agent, and can remove difficult stains from hardwood floors. After sponging the cola over your floor, rinse with a water-dampened sponge and buff dry immediately.
- 5). Dry your hardwood floor by hand. Wood floors are susceptible to warping, streaks and mineral deposits, so buff your floor dry with a towel to prevent any of these problems from developing.
