Outdoor Projects With a Tree Trunk

    Sculpting

    • An upright tree trunk, especially one that belongs to an already dead tree, can easily be turned into a wood sculpture. You can use it to carve animal figures, humans, stylistic objects and just about anything you think you have the skill to free from the wood. Many cultures have practiced this type of sculpting throughout history; a notable example being the totem pole sculptures of the Pacific Northwest native cultures.

    Furniture

    • A tree trunk that's lying on the ground can be carved fairly quickly into a convenient bench or series of seats with the use of a chain saw, hammer and chisel. Long trunks can be cut in half lengthwise to form a simple bench, or they can have one quarter of their circumference cut away lengthwise to form a more elaborate bench with a back support (assuming that the trunk is wide enough). You can also cut the trunk into segments and place them upright for use as stools or tabletops.

    Support Post

    • People have been known to build cabins whose four corners were supported by upright trunks from dead or living trees. Dead tree trunks, assuming that they're completely free of rot or internal fractures, can also have their tops cut off to form a convenient, already rooted series of posts for a balcony or overhanging lookout on a slope.

    Construction Lumber

    • One of the most common uses of tree trunks that have been cut down is for construction lumber. This is done all over the world on an industrial level with millions of felled trees. However, you could do it on a much smaller scale with the trunks you find or cut down on your own property. Different types of handsaws and power saws can be used to cut the trunk into beams and posts. If you wanted to make your project even simpler, you could use the trunks as is and build a rustic cabin.
