How to Become a Driving Trainer
- 1). Contact your local department of motor vehicles and ask about the requirements for driving instructors. For instance, find out how many hours of training are required or whether they'll still employ you with a ticket on your driving record. Ask what programs for driving instructors are available and accredited in your jurisdiction.
- 2). Pick up study manuals for the driving instructor certification test from your local library or a community college. The department of motor vehicle should also have these materials available.
- 3). Enroll in and complete a driving instructor program, providing any documentation necessary for the background check. You will take classes, including information on road signs and signals, safe driving practices and vehicle and natural forces regardless of which program you choose.
- 4). Prepare for the certification test with the course materials provided.
- 5). Take the certification test. This exam may be part of your program, depending on how it is structured. If it is not, you can apply to take the test through your state licensing agency. This test is essentially a harder version of the basic licensing exam all drivers take.
- 6). Apply for jobs as a certified driving instructor in your jurisdiction. The department of motor vehicles is a dependable employer. However, you also can get jobs through your police department, community colleges and high schools.
