How to Create Logos for Hats

    • 1). Choose the style of hat for which you are designing the logo. Measure the hat for printable areas on the front, side and back of the cap above the head band.

    • 2). Decide where you will put the logo. The most common printing area is above the brim of the hat, but logos can be printed on the side of the hat, on the brim or on the back of the hat.

    • 3). Brainstorm ideas, looking for inspiration in other artistic expression as to what you want your logo to portray. Yellow page ads, billboards, commercials and magazines are sufficient places to look for logo inspiration.

    • 4). Review the criteria you have from the client for the final product. Clarify with the client the most important, non-negotiable elements of the design project.

    • 5). Explore different approaches using a hat template from a free design software program or a blank piece of paper. Run some of your ideas across to your client, not for feedback, but reaction. Online screen printers have free software that you can play around with.

    • 6). Narrow down the visual aspects that you find more powerful and that fit into the concept that has begun to grow from your exploration.

    • 7). Experiment with color palettes. Your customer may have given you his preference for colors or may already have a previously used logo. Experiment with the colors from the existing logos and other ideas that you may have.

    • 8). Choose fonts and typeface that fit seamlessly into your pictorial design elements. Consider what your colors and design will look like being threaded onto a cap or screen-printed.

    • 9). Produce a digital replica of your hat logo. Present it to the client. Then print your logo onto a hat to see what it looks like in 3-D.

Adjust for any problems you see in the prototype. Once you have made adjustments, print a second prototype. Get customer approval.
